Established by identical twin sisters Jean and Jane Ford in San Francisco in 1976, Benefit Cosmetics was founded as a small beauty boutique called The Face Place. The driving motivation behind the boutique was to offer women an affordable place to buy skincare and cosmetics that mimicked the style of big label brands, only with a much smaller price tag. The company was renamed Benefit Cosmetics in 1989, at the same time as Benefit products were distributed more widely to department stores and other retailers.
